When renewing IP address I receive the error "DHCP Server Unavailable. renewing adapter". I have Win98 and am trying to connect through a cable modem. Any suggestions? I've removed the AOL adapter.
Has it worked before? You are not reaching the DHCP server at your ISP. Make sure all your connections are done. Also, does your ISP require any software to connect through the cable modem (such as PPPoE)?
I can't connect to the modem. It has never worked before. I tried installing the cable modem but it doesn't show up in device manager. Only the NIC. Any suggestions?
A cable modem will not show up in device manager. The cable modem is transparent to the network.
Is your account set up with the cable company for high-speed access?
When you connect up the cable modem, all the lights should be on. One of the lights indicates the connection from your NIC to the cable modem. If it is on, the problem is most likely between the cable modem and your ISP. You'll have to call them.
Getting stuck on boot up (and shutdown) is a major Win98 "feature". It happens here about twice a week. Have you tried forcing a shutdown and restarting? Sometimes I have to do this twice, but eventually it boots.
This seems to happen fairly frequently after intalling new software - I suspect some problem with cleaning up the registry, but I've never been interested enough to try to fix it.
I had a similar problem booting with NAV 2002 installed on a computer with a Netgear network card. There is a new patch for the cards, I am told. In my situation though I replaced the cards and used them in other systems where they worked fine.
Still having trouble! I got it the computer to boot up and reinstalled Win98, but how the same error when I use Winipconfig. "DHCP server unavailable" error. I only have one TCP/IP. The lights are on. The cable modem is talking to the pc but it won't renew an ip address. any suggestions? Thanks!
