Hi,

I have had problem with my HD: bad contact in power calble. Random HD failure crashed my win98SE installation: at bootup, I get only 16 colors, and an error "cannot find ui.dll". Also: runtime.dll failure.
A limited Win98se re-install in the same dir did NOT solve the problem. Setting colors to 256 colors doesn't help: after restart, system sets them back to 16 colors.
Any hints?

Thanks,

If no one has any other suggestions:
Swap hard drive for a new one, use your existing as a slave later.

Have you ran scandisk from dos to fix any errors.

As a last resort fdisk your hard drive, format it and fully re-install windows. Start with just the basics, keyboard, mouse and monitor. If all works fine then add in the rest of your gear, one bit at a time.

CapsMan.

I looked up ui.dll in yahoo.com and it refers to Audio Galaxy if that is a program you have it also mentions that it is a file included in the epson printer drivers. The display problem, I would go into safe mode and take out all the duplicates in the device manager paying close attention to the monitors and the display adapter. Then I would reboot the computer and let the computer detect them and load the correct display adapter driver. The suggestion that CapsMan said about putting a spare hard drive would be good so long as the video drivers are the correct ones or you may have the same problem.
Hope these suggestions work, good luck.
Keep us posted,
Cindy

Hi,

thanks for the tips. Creating a slave drive seemed too drastic, so it was no option. What DID help was to remove the screen driver & re-install it.
I now have a PC with correct colors that shows errors on not finding ui.dll & runtime error somewhere else, but that seems functional at least for the rest.

Thanks.
