We have a PC that was running Win95 and has just been upgraded to Win98. Since then the PC has become unusable *unless I log in*.

If I skip the log in (Novell & NT) or if I log in as a user, the Office Shortcut Bar and MAPISP32 both hang, leaving the shell completely unusable. If I log in as myself - an account with admin rights - then all is well. Note - my drive mappings are no different to anyone else.

In my mind I am trying to link network rights with conflicting Windows components and I see no connection.

Any ideas bordering on genius would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

Have these people logged in before? Do they have a profile.
Because it sounds like there profile is corupt. You can delete it out and get them to relog in.
Not sure if that will fix it ...but give it a try.

I should have mentioned that user profiles are disabled.

To me, it all sounds like a matter of timing. From what you say, 3 things are tring to load up at once.

Unless you want to wipe the hard drive clean, and reinstall,
or you log in the computer everytime, I have a couple of suggestions.

* 1) Dump that resource Hog Office Shortcut bar! Seriously.
> Put shortcuts for your MS office applications on the Desktop.

> Windows 98 - Security, is limited.
I understand why you would want the profiles, so that different users can have their "own workstation", however,
you could try, enabling the profiles,,,,,,,,
rebooting,,,,,,,,,,
> Then deleting, one, and rebooting, and see what happens.

> If you delete all (Users that is) and the office shortcut bar isn't loading up ALONG WITH FASTFIND in Msconfig,,,,,,,,
then you have other issues.

** BTW*** What is loading up in Windows at Startup ??
** Is there any other junk like - FastFind (for office)?
REal player,,,,, etc.
Dump those,,,,,,,,,
* I have also seen where SOUND CARD applications loading up at startup are problematic.

Thanks for those suggestions, I have found the solution.

By systematically removing and including various aspects of the boot process, like device drivers, items started from the registry and logins, I discovered that the problem only occured when I logged in to Netware with an account other than my own - NT/Win98 seemed to be fine. Therefore I re-installed the Novell client and all is now well. I still don't actually know why the problem was occuring, but at least I have a fix.

Thanks again.

Go to start / run and type msconfig. Here you can control what loads when booting up and logging onto the PC. It may require you to deselect one or two options at a time, but when the PC boots up ok, you will work out what is causing the issue. Try be deselecting any Virus software from loading first. That normally acuses issues.
