Hello,

The win98 client is logged on to the network. Printers is installed and shared on the NT4.0 server. When I try to install a shared network-printer on the client I can't browse the list of shared printers on the server. But I CAN just write the path to the shared printer and the printer is installed!

\\server\sharedprintername

Why can't I just browse the list of shared printers?

IMHO SMB sucks.

Can you see the server in the network neighborhood? Do you have a WINS server on the network? You may have an issue with your master browser. How many hosts are on the network?

No, I can't see the server or other clients in the network neighborhood. I don't have a WINS server on the network. I only have this one host (NT4.0) except for an unix database-server.

You have a configuration problem on the network. This is not a problem with the printer. (this is a printer forum)

Hosts are all devices with a network card and not just the server.

If you have less than 10 devices with network cards you can disable the browse master on all but your NT4 machine and that might help, assuming the devices are configured properly.

If you have more than 10 then MS suggests that you install a WINS server. One comes with NT4, so install the service, start it and then add the WINS info to your DHCP server info.

I make a lot of assumptions with the information in this post. I would need much more info about your setup for a more detailed answer.

However this is not the correct forum and I get paid $145. /hr to do this in real life.

Good luck and have fun,
