Hi

I have a small network with a server running Win2k Server and about 10 computers with XP SP2. We also have 1 computer running Win95 accessing the domain. This connection works fine.

I am in the process of setting up a new WinXP SP2 computer to replace with Win95 one. The problem I’m facing is that the user of the Win95 computer can’t logon to the Win XP computer. I have checked the setup for the Win XP computer, all seems to be fine and a number of other users can logon to it. It appears that the logon for this user only works on the Win95 computer as they can’t logon to any of the other XP computers (not just the new one).

I’ve checked the user’s details in active directory but can’t see any obvious differences in setup/security between the Win95 user’s account and the rest of the user accounts.

Can anyone tell me why this is so or where I could look to find out? I’d prefer not to have to setup a new User account for this person if at all possible.

Many thanks
Karen

On the third line of the login screen, do you have the user trying to logon to the domain or to the local machine?
Does the user receive a specific error when he tries to log on? Is there anything in the event veiwer on the XP machine or on the server?

Hi

The user is trying to logon to the domain, the third line is correct. It's the same domain they logon to from the Win95 computer.

The error message is:
The system could not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct, then type your password again....

But they are using the same username and password as for the Win95 machine which works perfectly well. And I've had them try logging on a number of times on different days so I don't think it's a typo problem.

The event viewer on the XP machine shows a Userenv 1054 error - Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted). Group Policy processing aborted.

I've checked the DNS settings on the XP machine as the MS help suggested but the settings are correct. When other users logon to the XP machine there is no error in the event viewer. Other users can also logon to the Win95 machine without a problem.

Cheers
Karen

are u sure the user has a domain account and not only an local account on the w95 pc?

They are set up as a user on the server in the active directory. The settings appear to be the same as the other users. I'm assuming this means it is a domain account, would that be correct?

If they are in Active Directory Users and Computers, then they have a domain account. Right click on the user in question and go to the account tab. Verify the username they are supposed to use. Maybe just as a test, you should reset his password and try to log on with the new password.
