win95 IP configuration - is my thinking correct?

I have a small network - 30 win 95 users, 1 nt4 server

In a win95 client that I noticed, there is not an IP address specified under the IP address tap in TCP/IP properties. Therefore, I can safely assume that the computer is not using static IP addressing, correct?

However, DHCP is not enabled either.

My question then is, how is this computer seeing the network and the server? My guess is that it's using another protocol. In other words, there is no way it can be using TCP/IP to communicate with other computers/printers/servers etc unless TCP/IP is configured to use either DHCP or Static IP addressing.

Am I correct in my thinking here? Maybe I'm missing something.

I ask lots of questions, but I take care to be clear, and always post back results and resolutions so they can help others.

You can be useing another portocal then TCP/ip such as ipx/spx or netbios but where you see tcp/ip these would show up So long and thanks for all the fish.

so in other words, this computer is not using tcp/ip to talk to the network, because if it were, then this information would be included under TCP/ip properties in the network applet, correct thinking? I ask lots of questions, but I take care to be clear, and always post back results and resolutions so they can help others.

if you do not have a dhcp set or info in the box for a static address then it sounds like you are not using TCP/IP but if you are getting on the internet you are using TCP/IP you need it for the internet. (There expections in old cases you can have a novell sever swicth it form tcp/ip to ipx/spx very few people do this.) to see if you getting an address go to run and type winipcfg when it comes up go to the network card in the drop down tab at the top if you get an address of 0.0.0.0 or 169.X.x.x then you are not using tcp/ip So long and thanks for all the fish.

there is no DHCP service installed on our NT server, and there is no static IP address installed in TCP/IP properties, yet I can still browse the internet. I'm confused!!!! Theoretically I shouldn't be able to do this right?

The only thing I can think of is that we have cable modem service here, and the Use DHCP box is checked on. There is a firewall PC that I am told is running IIS server from our cable company in our back room. Maybe it is acting as the DHCP server???

But everytime I shut down (i think - I'll have to double check) and reboot and go to dos and type IPConfig, I keep getting the same string of numbers. Theoretically, if I were using DHCP, wouldn't it give me different numbers every time??? Maybe it does and I'll double check, but from memory I seem to think this is the case.

I ask lots of questions, but I take care to be clear, and always post back results and resolutions so they can help others.

no on a dhcp it will give the same number for so many days and then when your lease is up it will give you a new number. if the dhcp box is checked in TCP/IP then that is all you need to run dhcp it gets the rest of the info like where the dhcp sever on the fly.

the way it get it is the clent send a packet called requset for dhcp and then the dchp sends the info back

so it sound like you are using a dhcp sever with the cable modem So long and thanks for all the fish.

When you go in the network properties do you see any other protocols IPx, NETBEUI. If so, one of those others are being used.

kjonnnnn,

As a matter of fact, the only prototcol I see in network properties is TCP/IP - no other protocols are installed.

Under default gateway when I type ipconfig at dos prompt, it shows me the address for the router that the cable company installed here.

Therefore, do I positively conclude that the cable modem box running IIS is serving up my ip address?

I ask lots of questions, but I take care to be clear, and always post back results and resolutions so they can help others.

see that yopu said the dchp box IS checked you are running dhcp but IIS does not DHCP they may have dhcp services set up on the same machine. So long and thanks for all the fish.

It sounds like you are using DHCP. You must go to the start menu then to run and type "winipcfg". Check the IP info. If you have an address then it is using DHCP on Win 95.
