i wanted to install a 3rd hard drive to my win64 computer.
i bought a "promise ultra ata /133 pci controller card"
i installed it. never got prompted for drivers but according to "device mangager" it's working fine.
now i'm trying to install a maxtor diamond max 500 gig
drive. i attached the cables as normal the master end
to the hard drive. the computer won't boot up. i tried
all 3 different jumper settings: master, slave and cable
select. no luck. if i disconnect the connection from
the back of the hard drive my computer boots up fine.
i've installed hard drives before without problems and
i'm starting to wonder if this is a win64 issue ?
help anyone :)!

At what point does the boot fail? If it doesn't even start then you have a mobo or PSU issue.

it tries to boot, won't get far but
i do see a "/" rotating on the left
top corner. i'd have to try again to
see if there were a couple of lines
of text or not ...but then it hangs ...

Is it possible to attach your second HDD to the Promise card and see if it is recognized within Windows? If so, then try to attach the new drive on the card as well and see if it boots and recognizes both - or attach it to the Mobo and see what happens. It is possible that the BIOS boot sequence is looking for a bootable device on the promise card - check your settings and force a minimum number of bootable devices (i.e Primary 0, then CD, and no other options after that). Just a couple guesses that might help eliminate some possible variables and help narrow down the problem. My gut guess would be a driver issue within Win64 needing to be installed at the time of setup (like with XP) but never ran Win64, so no clue...

hey thanx all for input and help :)

i finally got the drive working this morning.
as it turns out it WAS the boot order.
in case anyone will have a similiar option:
i set the jumpers to cable select.
tried a couple of boot order changes till
i got it to boot. i know this part sounds vague,
but honestly i'm not 100 % sure what some of the
items there were. anywhoo it works, and my tails-a-wagging :)
