I can't get Win 2K to boot up. It hangs on the startup screen where the large Win 2K logo is. The progress bar gets half way and stops. I have done an emergency repair. I can't get it to boot safe mode. It stops trying to load at mup.sys. I tried recovery using console mode and ran chkdsk on all drives. It found no problem. I reseated all video and network cards. Still no luck

what happened before this? has it ever started properly? If yes, did anything change/happen (hardware/software added/removed, virus, major crash) between last time it did start and first time it didn't? Have you tried 'last known good' (available from F8 menu).

Yes I tried last known...
It has been working great. Another user shut the system down. He may have turned the machine off without shutting down Windows. I don't know as I can't get a straight answer from anybody.

I reinstalled to another drive and am using the comupter now. I tried copying system and system32 files and drivers from the new installed folder to the old, but that doesn't work either.
I have a lot of software loaded and I don't want to have to start over.

WHen the startup screen with the logo appears, the progress bar is already at half point, but hangs there. Is there a boot log file or error file that needs to be erased?

I did have something a bit similar - but it didn't happen all the time - and i think I know what caused it - nothing like ypur situation (ie, I could log on sometimes - message in event viewer about hard disk controller error. But I'd being experimenting with various boot managers some of which had corrupted my MBR...)

So only thing I'd suggest is using the fixmbr & fixboot commands available from recovery console. It won't do any harm, but I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Are you logging in as a user of an administrator. I have seen time when only an administrator could log into a machine. When this happens, about 50% of the time re-installing the last sevice pack seems to fix the problem.

Also, have you tried re-installing to the original drive? You should get an option to upgrade the version of windows that is already installed, even if it is the same version you are installing.

Anouther solution is to check your cache in the bios if they are disabled it could cause this problem. Try enabling them as I had the same problem a while back.
Even when I tryed to reinstall it. The setup would hang on me. I enabled My cache and presto it worked first time.
Hope this helps you
Please reply and tell me how it go's
Regards Paul

Two things -
griffingr - I never got to the login screen. It hangs before that.

Paulsy - I'll try that next time. I already reinstalled the OS. Oh well, now I have a fresh clean install of my most necessary apps. I'm upgrading my Ghost software so that I can ghost 2000 partitions.

Thanks for the help
