I have setup a Win2K server to accept PPTP VPN connections. I am able to connect with no problems, the problem i am having is once i connect i am unable to browse or connect to any resources. I have checked the IP configuration of the VPN connection and i am getting a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 when i am using 255.255.255.0 on my LAN. It is recieving this information from my DHCP server. So i am not real sure where the problem is. Any Help would be greatful. Thanks

Scott

That subnet mask is OK. Have you tried connecting to a resource from a run command. \\servername\share? Is the IP itself one that is in the range of your network? Matt Wray

I have tried connecting from the run line with no success. The IP is one that my DHCP server assigned so it is in the range of my LAN. I am able to ping computers on my network just cant connect to them.

If you've added any filters on the connection, remove them and try browsing then . I fyou are using the older OS run WINS on the server to resolve names over the vpn.

What OS are you connecting with? I have had issue simular to this. For Win9x try setting the workgroup name the same as the domain name. For NT4 and Win2kpro use the logon using dialup connection. I even joined my NT platform clients to the domain so that when the user logs on with their network credentials they get all their mapped resources.

You should still be able to resolve names even if you are not a part of the domain or workgroup.

I have the same problem, but can connect using IP addresses and can ping. You can set up the default DNS and WINS sever addresses in the registry of the VPN server. This will default the VPN clients settings globally. The key is:-
HKLM\System\CurrentCOntrolSet\Services\RemoteAccess\Parameters\IP
Values DNSnameservers &WINSnameserver

I must add that this hasn't helped me resolve names but my WINS is on another server, try it. I think i have a routing problem and that the clients can't access the WINS server or the WINS server can't send the response, any ideas?

Bit scratchy on routing tables!

OK it works.
I have my DHCP and WINS server on a different server to my VPN server, the registry entries on the VPN server point to the 2nd server for WINS resoloution and i have the DHCP relay agent installed on the VPN server.
Must note that the DHCP relay agent does not forward your WINS option in your DHCP scope to VPN clients this must be done in the registry. The relay agent obtains 10 IP addresses at a time for VPN connection.
I did in the end also install WINS on the VPN server replicating to the origonal WINS server just to make sure, and i can now browse over my VPN.
By the way great forums.

SwoodsMCSE, Did you figure out a resolution to your problem? I have the exact same problem, and nothing has helped me out so far.
