We have 7 pc's (mix of 98 and XP) on a lan. We are currently running as a large workgroup and want to move to Win2K Server, our isp hosts our email and our domainname,
lets call it ' we use MDaemon Email server which gets all the email from our isp and delivers it to the Outlook clients - so far so good.

Setting up Win2K server as a domain controller /active directory - what name do we give it - can it be the same as our existing domain name (' If so how do we setup the DNS and still ensure that the server knows to get the email from the isp.

We also have an ADSL router which is the DHCP server - (this cannot be disabled as it is controlled by our friendly local telecomms company!) Therefore the Win2k Server sees the DHCP router as another server. All our client stations go directly to the ADSL Router for internet (web) access.

I really would like opinions/advice on how best to approach this.

W2k Server can be setup very simply as a domain controller using active directory. When you first install the windows 2000 server, make sure you setup DNS before you install the active directory domain. If you havent done this before make sure you follow microsofts preferred method of setting dns up. This will pre enable your dc server to be ready for your domain name, which you can use as your existing domain name. DCPROMO the server once dns is setup and away you go. the clients will still pick up ip from the dchp server (ADSL Router), all you need is a static IP for your server.

Let me know if you need any further help!

stehazza, Thanks.
The $64,000 question then, is DNS. Where do I find the 'microsoft preferred method of setting up'? You don't get much for your money from Microsoft, Win2K Server on CD and a whole lot of holes that need filling!

just run DCpromo, and it will prompt you to install DNS for you, in case you dont have it installed. It will do it automatically.
YEs you can name the domain the same as your acme.com. Depending on what you will have at the end you must do certain configuratiosn to your DNS .If you have a real IP assigned (registered), if you will host your web site (not your ISP), etc...I think you must run your internal DNS, and use forwarders to your ISP DNS for internet use. Keep fighting for your knowledge!
