Does anyone know if there is an optimal partition size for installing Windows 2000 Server on a 20GB drive?

Thanks in advance

Re: the win 2K server O/S install, it is recommended that you partition a min. 2 gig space on the boot disk. NTFS is recommended unless you wish to dual boot with another pre win 2K O/S. NTFS offers advantages in that it is less susceptable to crashes. The O/S with many of the features should take up a little more than a gig with some headroom. All apps and data should be on other partitions. If you format with NTFS, you could create dynamic volumes hence you could be flexible and append later additional space to either an apps or data logical drive. If you do that keep some unallocated space to be able to append later. In summary 2 gig for ther server O/S, partition say 4-6 gig for apps, 8 gig for data and 4-6 gig unallocated to be used to append later to either the apps or the data logical drive.

Would you want to increase the O/S partition if the server is gointg to be running Active Directory?

Yes.

Microsoft has an Active Directory Sizer utility that is meant to give you a rough estimate of how much space you want to reserve for the AD. Basically asks you a series of questions and gives you recomendataion on number of servers, AD and Replication size, etc...I forget what the exact number is for resource used per item...

If I remember right it is part of the Resource Kit and and/or can be downloaded from Microsoft's support site.
