Hi all,

We have a problem where we have to use NetBeui to resolve an issue where a 2k server is not showing in the n/hood.

Using DHCP to pass on DNS and WINS info to clients.
Using 2 WINS servers (both replicating well)
Using 2 DNS servers
You can ping the servername and get the fqdn name and ip back
It seems that the NetBios name isn't advertising
Client OS's are win98 and 2000 (Same problem with all clients)
Other servers are showing in n/hood
Only using TCP/IP previously and it used to work
Nothing in events to point at a solution

I really want to get rid of NetBeui again but it won't work as the server cannot use trusts between 2kserver and NT4server. (Soon to be upgraded!)

Found out about this new tool today, it's called Browcon and is apparently very good for resolving issues with the Browser service i.e. machines not appearing in Network Neighborhood:

Worth a look for you.

Cheers, Antony

Is netbios installed on the problem machine?

To check, goto TCP/IP->Advanced->WINS

make sure you have file and print sharing enabled on the problem pc, if that isn't enabled it won't show up

Hi Guys,

Yes Netbios over IP is enabled.
The host that is not showing is a server and has been visible before.

I will take a look at Browcon.

As I said earlier I have had to add netbeui but want to remove it and get back to where we used to be.

Thanks

Used Browcon and found that the master browser server is missing.!?!

Looking at how to resolve this.

The server that is not visible is (should be) the master browser as it is the DC for the domain.

The browser master is not always the DC, look for events in the event log regarding elections of the master browser, then check that system or shut it down for 15 minutes so that another server is elected

Try setting the Win98 clients to Master Browser Desierable to "OFF". That's pretty close to the actual setting as listed under the advanced properties. You'll know it wehn you see it.

This setting resides under:

NetworkNeighborhood->NICAdpater->Advanced
