Hello,

I have a share on my network with users files in it. How do I hide the folder from everyone except the user who the folder belongs to. I am running a Windows 2000 Active Directory network with Windows XP Home Edition Workstations.

Thanks,
Camarate

Do you want to actually make the folders hidden or just restrict who can access them?

Restricting access is easy and very effective, using the security tab under properties you can simply designate the person(s) who can access that folder. Other users will see that one folder but won't be able to see the files/folders inside.

I want to make the folders hidden, because I really know how to restrict the access through Active Directory.

I need that, if the Windows XP Home Edition's user not have permission to access a folder, it will not show in Windows Explorer.

Thanks,
Camarate

You can hide a folder from everyone by adding a $ to the back of the share name. So to share a folder called "Sales" and make it hidden, the share name would be "Sales$".

This does not limit everyone from being able to access the folder, it just hides it from being see in the available shares. If you want it to be secure, then hide the folder and then give only the specific user access rights to the folder.

Thanks kokaina, but I think that the "Access-based Enumeration" is for Windows 2003 Server only, and my network is based in Windows 2000 Server.

Hope someone can help me?

Thanks,
Camarate

I told you how to do it since you have windows 2000 you cant take advantage of the Access Bases Enumeration, you have to create a hidden share and then map that user to it. There isnt any other way of hiding shares in with 2000 server.
