hi, just finished rebuilding a computer that previously had win2k installed on it, reformatted and repartitioned the hd, installed win2k sp4 (used the bootable cd), and evrything went fine until install finished and now it's trying to boot up normally...and it freezes on the windows splash screen only AFTER the progress bar loads up completely.

now, i started it up in safe mode, and there were no hardware conflicts other than a missing driver for the video card (fixed already), but it's still freezing on bootup...

what else should i look for in safe mode? what else should i try?

I've seen this occur when I had two pieces of hardware attempting to use the same IRQ and/or talking on the same channel at the same time. Check your bios settings (press delete key when first booting) to see if IRQs are loaded by operating system PnP. Also, check your master/slave settings on hard drives and CD/DVD drives. Can't have two masters on one ribbon. I hope this helps.

Could try disconnecting/disabling network, sound, modem cards - see if it boots, and connect back one at a time if it does.
