When I attempt to hibernate in Win2k I receive the following error message:
"The device driver for 'Communications Port (2)' is preventing machine from entering hibernation. Please close all programs and try again. If the problem persists you may need to update this driver.".
MS Knowledge base # Q247480 addresses this problem. It states that it happens after using a modem. I get the error all the time, without any use of the modem. Also MS does NOT give a cure, they only state how to "reproduce" the problem. I have deactivated Com Port 2 in the OS, I have disabled it in the BIOS, seperatly and together without any effect.

What type ....mfg/model...of computer are you using?

I am guessing laptop...what other devices are installed...modem, infrared, Palm Pilot or other similar handheld....anything else that utilizes a serial connection?

You may want to try uninstalling the modem driver as well as any other software/driver that uses serial communications...handhelds, cameras, and the like. Just to isolate the issue.

It sounds like a driver problem...but, I would venture to guess the driver is not WHQL certified if it fails to support Hibernation.

Built comp myself, Gigabyte 71XE motherboard, Athlon 700mgh proceddor, 256 DRAM. Had installed Win 2K spring 2000, added service pack 2, absolutely NO problems with the OS. Did have one problem with cable connection 2 mos ago. Did what cable tech advised me to do and comp completely crashed. Had to reinstall the OS. Did so with all original progs except left Palm Pilot out. Got this problem right after reinstalling OS on newly formatted drive. Since then checked for latest driver revision, reinstalled it, diabled the port completely, both in the BIOS and in Win2K. Same result.
Any other suggestions?

You actually use Hibernation on a desktop? I don't really like hibernation even on laptops, except when I am running on battery power out in the field...for the most part I keep it disabled.

Anyway, so you are saying this occurred on a clean install with nothing outside of native W2K +SP2? But, it did not occur prior to your tech induced crash? Very strange!!!

If it occurred on a clean install, then my guess would be one of two things. You have a BIOS problem (trying setting defaults or see if there is an update) or you are missing some chipset/OEM specific drivers that are necessary to support the various power management modes. Although, ACPI compliant computers/BIOS' rely on W2K to handle this.

I guess if it were me, I would run through the running process' and services to see what kinds of things are active. Any of these that I cannot identify I would stop or end task on and test hibernation.
