I'm testing a server with Samba 2.2.6 and a single Win2k client. Frequently when opening files from the server the client will lock up and then complain about either invalid passwords or shares already being in use. (Exact error messages can be grabbed if required.)

smbd logs the following each time this happens:

[2002/11/07 17:28:22, 0] smbd/server.c:main(707)
smbd version 2.2.6 started.
Copyright Andrew Tridgell and the Samba Team 1992-2002
[2002/11/07 17:28:25, 0] smbd/sec_ctx.c:initialise_groups(244)
Unable to initgroups. Error was I/O error

Additional debug info can be captured if required... any suggestions gratefully received as this is driving me mad :)

Give a try by entering the "force group" parameter in the smb.conf file.

Force group is set on all shares on this server. When the drive is mapped I can read/write/execute on it. The problem is sporadic and causes my client to hang up while attempting to access a file before finally timing out with an invalid password message. If I disconnect and reconnect the drive then everything works again.
