Hello all,
I know there are about a million threads about the bsod, so what's one more? I'm running Win2K server on a Dell 1400SC PowerEdge dual pentium III machine. All was running fine until I tried to install Veritas Backup Exec 8.5 (the cd that shipped with the machine.) After install, upon reboot, I get the bsod "...driver couldn't be loaded. \systemroot\sytem32\drivers\scsichng.sys" I boot up in safe mode and look at the device manager, and the Archive Python tape drive is showing an exclamation point - driver not loaded. I've tried reinstalling the driver and it appears successful, but on reboot - same bsod. I've removed the device completely - same result. I haven't physically removed the tape drive, should I? Is plug and play messing with me?

I've tried booting from the Win2k CD and repair the installation i.e. check system files. I get an error saying it can't repair the installation. something to do with a restore file being invalid. I didn't write it down, sorry.

I tried booting to the last known good configuration, same blue screen.

I don't want to reinstall the OS if I can avoid it, but it's looking like that's my only option unless someone has the answer.

Thanks for any help

How about boot in safe mode and check the box disable device.Leave it hooked up and see if it will boot properly with the device disabled.

HI!

Your problem might be caused by a SCSI driver file replaced by BE setup.

Try to run from safe mode the command

SFC /scannow

(if I'm not mistaken in syntax).

Also you can try to apply SP2 in safe mode.

You can also run NTBACKUP (start-programs-accessories-system tools) to create the recovery disk, then try to boot from CDROM and run Fast Repair using the ERD.

Bye

I was unable to install SP2 from safe mode, got an error. Tried making the ERD then use Fast Repair - unsuccessful. Message - "..line 3057 contains a syntax error."
I did fix the problem, though. I uninstalled the device from the hardware manager, then pyhsically moved the offending driver to a different directory so Windows couldn't see it. Then was able to boot clean. At that point, I created a new ERD (just in case). Reinstalled the device as if it were a new device, voila! No more bsod. I've since installed SP2 and all seems to be running smooth.
Thanks for all the help.

One more thing I forgot to mention...after I uninstalled the device from the hardware manager, I physically unplugged the device in order to get the clean boot. Seemed to be the critical step I missed the first dozen or so times.
