Depends on reason for fail,anyway,backup Your registry;go system tools - backup(do it);install Windows Recovery Console;allways have one bootable Win2k pro CD ;Service Packs and Your Apps. recorded on CD.Allso if You have valuable data on boot drive make copy of them on different drive in case You have to format boot drive or partition.

Click Start > Run and type ntbackup
This will start the backup wizard. Follow the steps in the wizard until it asks you what you want to backup. Choose system state data . Back the data up to a folder on your hard drive (it's probably going to be around 300 or 400MB). You can then burn this to a CD.
System State Data is a complete backup of all the important OS components, including the registry and class database files that are required to restore a corrupt OS.
If your system fails to boot you need to start it using your original Windows 2000 installation CD. First you must enter the system BIOS (usually by pressing DEL at startup) and change the boot order to boot from the CD drive. By default it's A: C: . Then restart the system with the Win2K CD in the CD Drive. Choose the Repair option then run ntbackup and restore the system state data you burned.
Now, if your system won't boot there are some things you can do before resorting to system restores. The Boot Menu can save your life. As Windows starts you will see a message at the bottom of the screen that says "Press F8 .."
Pressing F8 will bring you to the boot menu. One of the options you will see will be Last Known Good Configuration. If a bad driver or application rendered your system un-bootable then choosing this option will (9 times out of 10) get you going again.
Installing the Recovery Console can also be a lifesaver. The RC provides a command line based shell that will allow you to uninstall drivers, fix bad boot records and a plethora of other good things. You can install the recovery console from the Windows 2000 installation CD. Put the CD in the drive and go to a command prompt (DOS prompt). At the prompt type winnt32 /cmdcons and press enter. Click OK at the dialog box that appears and the recovery console will be installed. You won't notice any immediate changes until the next time you restart your system. Then you will see an extra entry in the boot menu for the Recovery Console.
