If you wan is directly connected to you lan, you do not need ports, just the protocols.
Can they at least 'see' eachother.
And please define WAN, what is in between (firewall, router...)

ok, well the start with the routing on all in between devices, the routers and the firewall.
You will never get to the server if the ping does not even work, that's basic networking.

With ping being blocked at the firewall, we are having to set up a vpn for each mac and ip for the users to connect. Thought I would let you know of the resolution.
