Win2k acting as server goes down without reason

We have a small lan of win98 machines with a win2k machine acting as the server. Win2k. Not win2kpro and not win2k server.

I know this is win2kpro forum but there isn't a win2k forum and I guess any answer I get might well apply to win2k.

The problem is this machine goes down every night after work sometime. Usually between 7 and 8p.m.

If someone comes in and switches it on again it will only stay up for an hour or so.

But it stays up all day.

I'd think power supply problems but no other machines in the school go down and the machine itself when you restart it comes up without any of the 'must scan the disk' things you get when a machine has gone down because of a power-out.

Any suggestions at all will be listened to carefully.

regards. abrogard.

I know this problem. I think that it will Definitely helps you:
1. Disable wakeonlan or similar functionality in BIOS of your w2k server + check the same functionality of the NIC on your server.
2. Upgrade BIOS version on your w2k server.

johnduggie - what do you mean win2k not pro or server - there is only pro and server (& advanced server). So, if this is NOT win2k pro, can you find out what it actually is?

Also - who set the machine up/has administrator access to it? - Just wondering if you can generate this behaviour with local group policies (there are lots of them, and I'm not an expert). And or, is there a scheduled task to shut the machine down at this time every day?

PS. Is it a proper shutdown (eg, not a hardware fault which could be heat related - so at about the same time each day something fails). Be surprised if its power unit if it runs all day (when presumably it has more demands on it)

Thanks for your suggestions guys....

The lan manager hasn't been communicating with me about what's happening so I don't know but I think the problem has gone away... I don't know why. Maybe they put another machine in. I'm in china here. The lan manager and everyone else is chinese and they don't speak english.
They'll ask me to help and get me started on something like this post and then they'll not communicate for weeks.. just like this time... finish up wasting my time and yours.. except I learn something from your responses even if I can't follow through on the ground.

Sorry about the win2k thing - they showed me cd with win2k, win2kpro and win2kserver written on it in English (everything else in Chinese) and they pointed to win2k as the one they had.

That 'wake up on lan' thing intrigues me. I'll try to find out more about that.

ciao.
