I'll try to explain this as best I can, it's bit confusing... but hopefully we can find out it's it me causing the problem.. or just windows!

On my server there is a shared folder called "shared" that "everyone" in the domain has access to.

Within that folder, there are many sub-folders... one of which I decided to only give access to a handful of users, a group called "ops"

Once I removed "everyone" from the folder and gave access to the "ops" group, all seemed fine.

Then, something caused the secured folder and files within to lose all security settings... even me (administrator) logged into the console couldn't add/remove users or groups to the files... all I could do was take ownership and even then, I couldn't change access rights (even the users that HAD access to the files would get read errors...

Unfortunatly I had to get these files working again very quickly and tried MANY different solutions in a hurry... the sad part is I do not know what I did to fix it.

I unwillingly ran into the same problem again, tring to secure a subfolder for another shared group. I have been unable to restore access to certain files... I"m not sure what exactly is causing it, but it happens once I try to secure the folder for a group or users.

Anybody run into this problem? or have a solution for this? Is it something i'm doing wrong?

Thanks!
Lan

Did you uncheck the box that says allow inheritance? it seems to me that if you remove everyone and the members of that group are part of the everyone group that may cause problems. I would make sure the folder is not inheriting permissions. then set the security settings.

I think I figured out what I did originally to fix it. Still not sure what I did wrong to begin with! but I went to security / ownership , changed to admin (it looks like it was set to a certain user and no admin access at all... but I can undo the problem on a file by file basis, but even if I fix it and tell it to propigate through out the chosen folder, it stops at an error (another file that I do not have ownership of) once i change the ownership, i can change the security back.

Thanks for the help!

You may need to Audit that folder, to see if someone is accidentally changing it.
