Anyone out there with a Dell and Win2000 Server?

Getting ready to buy a Dell C800 Laptop and install Win200 Server. I know of a couple of people who have the Dell Latitude with Win200 Server and have no problems. I plan to get a 3-Com PCMCIA modem and network card. Two separate cards, not a combo card.

Well any thoughts are appreciated...

Thanks!

Steve

I need a laptop with windows2000 server. However my dell rep told me that it is not possible to buy one. He said you would have to install the OS and void any warranty in the process. Have you done this? Is there a way to buy a dell laptop with windows2000 server?

Actaully, my wife an MCT/MCSE was the wiz with this stuff. She actually setup a Win2000 Professional Dell Laptop with a Dual boot. So, we have Win2000 Professional or Win2000 Server. I'll e-mail this thread to her so see if she can supply details on how she accomplished this task. I know it was a little painful...

I don't see the problem, you just can't buy it pre-installed from dell that's all.

You can install it yourself though, it's the same OS, just more tools and services.

You would need to install it yourself. I do not believe Dell offers the option of using Windows 2000 Server on their Latitude laptops; just Pro.

I have several C800 and C810 that are running 2000 Server and have encounterd no issues. They all have at least 512 MB of memory.

I'm not certain about the warranty. But I have not had any issues with it. AJ

I run Windows 2000 Advanced server on a dell laptop. Drivers are the same as 2000 pro so you will have no problems. It works great, and also works great under linux.

Void the warranty? Maybe the software warranty, but not the hardware. Dell cannot require you to run any OS in order to maintain the hardware warranty.

I would reformat and install W2K Server and not worry about it.

Just my $.02

Void the warranty... not even the software warranty. You should of been provide with either a restore diskette, or the windows that came with the dell along with a driver diskette. Dell cannot dictate to you what software you use, even the OS. What they are saying, is that they will not provide any support if you install Server, that's all.

Well, Compaq has stated the same thing about their laptops. I bought one and asked them about installing Windows 2000 Pro on it originally, and they stated it would also void the warranty, because it makes low-level calls to hardware, which if the drivers were wrong, could damage them. There is a clause in their warranty statement about operating systems I believe (referring to Compaq's) so Dell may be right in saying it, just as a protection for them. I still went ahead and installed Win 2K Pro and no problems for the most part. If I need to send it for service, I'll just restore Windows ME on it :)
