Win2000 server desktop locked up?

This is the second time this has happened in the past month. The win2000 server is running, everyone can access the files, its seems to be fully functional, but the only thing the I can view at the server itself is Task Manager. I can't view Control Panel, or any programs or functions. I know I have to re-boot, but has anyone else had this problem to give me a clue as to why I can't run anything or access other screens besides the desktop and Task Manager? I checked for viruses, spyware, etc last time this happened. No negative results. Any ideas? (Example, I clicked on my Veritas shortcut to view last night's backup. The program will not display but I can see under Task Manager that the app is running.)

try this;

From Task manager click File, Run and type Explorer.exe. see if that gives you control back.

I couldn't display Run. And a warm re-boot didn't work. I had to turn off the server. I checked my Veritas logs and the backup hasn't ran for two days, so the server started having problems a couple of days ago. That will teach me. Now I know I have to check it every single day.

I still have one old Novell 3.2 server online installed on a Digital 3100. It's only locked up two times in 7 years. I can pretty much ignore the system because it's so reliable. We're replacing it with a new Windows 2000 server later this year. That means more crashes, re-boots and constant Microsoft updates to deal with. Oh well, keeps me employed!

If you are going to be replacing the server this year, you should go with 2003 and not 2000. Mainstream support for Windows 2000 ends June 30, 2005.

Windows 2003 is much more reliable and stable.

You should look at WSUS for patch management as it makes it a lot easier.

the button you want to use is "new task", and enter "explorer".
