Hello,
I cant figure this out. Im about to go through a major upgrade for my network from win 2k to win 2k3/xp. I placed an xp box directly on the same switch with my win 2k dns/domain controller etc. the entire network is static IP. i can ping the gateway, but i cant ping any other nodes on the network, join the domain, or access any of the resources. i know the driver is up to date, and all the TCP/IP settings are correct. Any ideas?

i just put two xp machines on the same switch. They will communicate between each other, but neither will speak to any win 2k machine.

The xp boxes won't even ping the 2k boxes? Can a 2k ping an xp?

Anyone added a software firewall to your W2K machines? E.g. Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, etc., etc.

ROGER - G0AOZ.

nope, xp cant ping 2k, but the two xp i placed can ping each other..there are no firewalls enabled, no zone alarm etc. its all disabled to figure out the problem.

May seem like a silly question, but are th subnet masks correct? I know you said your IP configuration is correct, but it won't hurt to check.

yep, all good. i even had some other techs look over everything

yep. doesnt work either way. the 2k will speak to each other, and the XP's will speak to each other, but i cant get the two diff OS's to speak.

Don't know what you're using, but some switches can be set to block ICMP (ping). Have you put a 2k and an xp on the same switch?

Are you pinging by name or by IP?

Yep, i put them on the same switch, the same switch that allows the XP <-> XP ping, and the 2k <-> 2k ping. I tried pinging by both IP, and Name. The DNS server is on the very same switch as well.

Try installing NETBEUI protocol on all machines and see if Network Neighbourhood then sees 'em all.

Really weird. I know that XP introduced Simple File Sharing, we had some trouble with that and ended up turning it off; but that was a problem accessing shared folders, ping would work as it's a much lower level protocol.

Not sure where to go with this, I assume xp and 2k both ping the DNS server...

G0AOZ: I tried that. Thanks though.

Figured it out..

I was giving it an IP that was out of the subnet mask's range...

Weird, it didnt warn me about it either..It shouldnt allow you to do that without warning you.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Let me get this straight, you want Microsoft to tell you what you can and can't do? Don't they do enough of that now?

The answer is "42"

Haha yea...

but i actually just tried it on my 2k3 server and it DID warn me. =)
