Hi everyone...

I am trying to join my XP pro station to my domain which is not a registered domain. I mean by that, registered to the internet. When I try to join my workstation to the domain I have the following error.

The computer could not join the domain because of the following error.

The specified server could not execute the requested operation

BTW, I'm sorry if my translation is not accurate cause usually I speak french.

Thanks for your help :) :)

Check your spelling of the name you do not have to include the . com if buy chance the domain name is then just type in french when you right click the my computer icon and then go to the proporties option then off to the network id just type in french ! If buy chance double check your dns options in DNS make sure you have it configured correctly !
Good luck !
Do you have dhcp running as well ? and if so
Do you have these options with in the servers services
005 NAME SERVER
015 DNS DOMAIN NAME
check to see if you have everything on the workstation configured correclty with in The nics tcp/ip options as well ! Anthony Cabanas

Here is what I've tried so far. I watched my tcp/ip properties in both server & wks so they match. My wks has a static IP. So I have no DHCP enabled. I have only one server which is a win 2k advanced server. I've also checked the spelling of my domain name. It asks me to enter the username and password of an account authorized to do this operation. I do enter the administrator's account password and the error message is coming after. Now one thing you must know is that it creates the wks informations into active directory. I can see the computer object but it shows as disabled. When I try to re-add the computer, it tells me that there is already an object with this name and asks me if I want to use it. I've tried to delete it and recerate it, nothing worked. So I'm kinda lost...

Thanks for your help

First you have to have local permission to perform the function of joining a domain (local user account and password, normally the machine administrator). Then you define the domain you wish to join. If you don't get an error stating the domain wasn't found, then you will be prompted for a domain user and password. When it asks you for the account and password, that pretty much tells me it is finding the domain but requesting a domain user who has the authority to add computers to active directory. The domain administrator has this by default (default domain policy) unless you have a group policy on the ou which contains the domain user account you are trying to use and the policy defines a different user for adding computers to the domain (which would override the default domain policy). Supply the domain username, the password, and the domain of that user. If the domain user is in a different domain, you must assign permissions to the domain policy in active directory of the domain you are wishing to join for that user from another domain to add computer accounts.

You could always add the computer account to active directory of the domain before attempting the join the computer to it to avoid the domainuser/password issue.

Seaspray0: I was promped to enter a username and password. Which I did using the admin username / password. My XP workstation is in the workgroup WORKGROUP. Yes I've also tried to add the computer manually... But nothing worked again... Regarding the policies, I didn't mess with them. I've put myself in the following groups:

DNSADMIN
DOMAIN ADMIN
ENTERPRISE ADMIN
ADMINISTRATOR
DOMAIN CONTROLLERS
SCHEMA ADMIN

Here is what I've done so far...

Thanks again for the help

Serge

I agree with Seaspray0. The problem isn't your rights or login on the server. You need to login to the XP workstation using an account that has local "administrative" priviledges. If you do not, the local system will not allow you to change the network configuration.

Log on to the local system with the local Administrator account. Not the Domain administrator account because that account does not have rights to the local XP workstation.

I have a new problem now....

What I've done is this. I have formatted my server and reinstalled it. In the section in regards to the domain, there was a section mentioned "If your domain is not registered on the net, put local" so I've put "MAISON" as the domain name and "LOCAL" cause it is not registered. So in active directory it is shown as "maison.local". Now, I try to make my XP station join the domain and I have the following error message "network path not found". When I do the add procedure I go through network ID procedure. It does not create the computer object in active directory, but if I create it manually it sees it and wants to use it. But still having the same error.

Also, I can do "\\server1" I can access it but I don't see the share that i've created. The share is called "Data" If I do \\192.168.0.20 (Server's IP) it does the same thing. No share. I made sure that netbios is installed on 2K server and activated in XP WKS. Now the reverse is ok. What I mean is that my server can access all the shares on my XP station...

Something is missing but I don't know what...

Someone can help????

Thanks again

Serge
