G'day,
After all the time you guys spent on me and my problem, I am bloody embarrased to ask for "help" again. With all my ant-virus, Fire Wall etc., running, I downloaded a music video, it was after that task that I noticed later in the day when I started my computer again, it was taking forever to load. Once loaded, I noticed that the "pointer" for my mouse was moving oddly, I tried to start checking my email through Incredimail, it received all incoming e-mails, after that was finished I was going to look at Zone Lab Fire Wall to see or read any alerts, then the computer froze, I tried to reach Task Manager by Ctrl, Alt Del, it was very slow opening, and when it did I "ticked" on "task manager" and it was like the Tab was froze, but after I waited a few minutes it finally opened. And I notice the Hard Drive "Busy" light stays on all the time, or seemingly always. May I trouble you for some advice again mates?

Try Safe Mode and see how it runs.

822430 - Windows Stops Responding When You Click a Large AVI File in Windows Explorer

There is a bug in XP in handling AVI files, where the file is corrupt or broken, causing explorer to read the whole file looking for index or property details.

It has been suggested to correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files.

Also try these.

A suggested workaround: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key below and delete the default data (right pane).

For AVI's

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\
shellex\PropertyHandler

For MP3's

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.mp3\shellex\PropertyHandler

Note: Make a backup of each key before editing.

Have a look around these links.

G'day,
For some reason it won't start in safe mode.

Can someone please help me figure out why I cannot start in Safe Mode so I can troubleshoot this problem? Thank you.

If you have no access to Windows you can either try a repair installation, or see what you can do in the Recovery Console.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

Try running ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

What errors are you getting when trying to go into Safe Mode?

-----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"
-----------------------------------------------------

No errors, when I scroll to the safe mode on the menu, and hit enter, it boots normally

I started running the program ewido ant-malware last night at 5:00 PM, it noew has been running 561 minutes, it has found 77 infected items so far, is there a reason it it is taking so long to scan? It scans for a few minutes, then stops for a few minutes

Cancel the anti-spyware program. Then open a command prompt (START->run_> Type: cmd and press the enter key. Once the command window opens, type the following: chkdsk c: /f Press the enter key. You will get a message about not being able to lock the volumne, do you want to run chkdsk on the next restart. Press Y. Then reboot.

CHKDSK will check your drive for errors and attempt to fix them. Then run the anti-spyeare program. Then You want to run any kind of hd and registry cleaning program you like (I use System Mechanic). After doing all of the above, do a hard drive defrag. Also make sure your anti virus definitions are up to date.

The above SHOULD help your performance and eliminate problems.

G'day,
I finished the CHKDSK, computer rebooted, but I got an error message saying I had tologinas an administrator, I am the owner, no one else uses this computer, how do I do as identified in the error message? Thank you

G'day, again ... rebooted agin, this is the exact error message: "WJVIEW Error.... Could Not Execute Main: The System Cannot Find The File Specified.

What do I bloody do now?

Well you have been around the horn. Lots try this Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System tools. Now select Disk cleaner. Once that is done right click on the big blue E. Select properties, then click on the delete cookies, then click on delete temp internet files, and delete history.
Now go download (a Square) at Now let this run until it is finished. Then let it clean your system. If you are running run dsl or cable you NEED A FIREWALL. It don't have one go download sygate Best of luck post back when you are done.

Was there any clues about your Safe Mode problem in this thread?

Are you running anything similar to Nero's InCd?

With so much malware allegedly on your machine and so many other problems, I would be considering saving my valuable data (if not already done), reformatting and doing a clean install.

Maybe I'm taking this to the Hardware forum?

What size hard drive do you have?
How full is the drive?
Perhaps that last large file was too much?

G'day,

I can't find anything to help me get to safe mode.If the recoveryconsole is used, will I lose all my sved files and valuable data on my harddrive? Now it getsb to the Windows XP logon screen, then it stops loading, and goes back to the startup is there a way to get to msconfig? AVG and ewino ran fine, found infected cookies, cleaned them, now it won't load at all(windows). Being a disabled combat veteran I usee my computer everyday in support groups with fellow veterans suffering from PTSD, and all that informationis on the harddrive it took a number of years to gather. On a fixed income prevents taking to a repair shop. Can anyone help, please?

G'day, it's 40 GB, less than a third full ......... it will break my heart if I lose that data

When the computer is coming up. You should hold down the CRTL key and you should get a boot menu. Then you can boot to safe mode.

G'day, thanks mate, but I tried, it would not boot to a safe mode menu
