I have installed Win XP Pro on my laptop (Acer travelmate 341 with onboard NIC). The problem is, when my laptop used at home and not conected to LAN/Internet, system will be freeze/hang. XP still can boot completly, and still can used for a few minutes, and then system will be hang/freeze.

I've tried to add a static ip to my TCP/IP Configuration (not using DHCP), and also have tried to disable a Network Connection, but the problem still come. Is Win XP Pro just for Connected LAN/Internet Box only ?? or can i use it with standalone PC(box) ??

Any idea for my problem ??

Please help me.. thx.

I had a similiar issue happen on Windows 2000, when I was mapping a network drive to a friend's laptop on the other side of the country, through the internet. After I even disconnected the mapped drive, the machine 'stuttered' or paused seemingly randomly. I discovered that if I cleared my "recent documents" (or whatever it's called on the start menu), the problem went away. I'm guessing that Windows was trying to go out to the network every once in awhile, and try to load the icon for the file. In XP, there's recenly opened documents AND recently ran programs. Try clearing both, and see what happens.

Or you are running a Mail/Instant messenger type program trying to access the net on a regular basis and the machine is taking a while to time out trying to make the connection. When the freeze happens wait a while like minutes or so and see if XP ever returns. If XP comes back or eventually pops up an error or message of some sort you may fined the culprit.

Try CTRL+ALT+DEL to get to the task manager to see if you can see what process is active or not responding. If task manager won't start (wait for it) then you are truly frozen. The CRTL+ALT+DEL has a pretty high priority interupt so you should get it fairly quickly unless things are really halted/frozen. ----

Thank's for the reply.
But, my laptop still got frozen if i not connected to lan/internet. For rjkrash, when its frozen, i've been waiting for more than 15 minutes, but there's no error msg, and its still frozen, and i can't view the Task Manager (can't start). I've stoped all services that required net connection, such as Automaticly update, mail, etc and i've Uninstall Window Massanger (thank's to rjkrash, your article helped me to uninstall this component.. :) ) but it's still frozen....
I've tried to disabled my NIC card too, but it can't stop to solve this problem...

thanks,
