I am running Win XP PRO (with or without SP1 makes no difference). Everytime I try to run IE6 (sp1) I get a crash and when clicking to ackowledge the crash (i.e. send/don't send report to MS) the system refreshes and I lose most of my icons on the toolbar. This also occurs when I try to go to My Computer or Network Places too. Or Explorer! Have changed the NIC but made no difference - also changed driver but no difference. Re-installed MS Office XP Pro - no difference. Tried to disable everything in msconfig startup - no difference. My system is a P4 running 256MB RAM. This is dricing me mad - help!

Have a look in the event viewer & give more details on the error messages.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Internet Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q318378)

From web.
"The ability to Repair Internet Explorer does not exist in the version that ships with Windows XP. This feature only becomes available after you upgrade to a newer version. This is normal and has been this way since Windows 98 and IE4. However, you can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

You will need to have your XP CD available

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Have tried all the above options but to no avail. Have disabled everything in startup (msconfig) but still have the problem. Reinstall of XP and IE did not make any difference. Tried the sfc but no difference. Tested HDD but all ok. When the network is disabled it is fine, but have changed network card to no avail.

Any ideas?

Done your virus checking?
I'm seeing you have other problems with Outlook...

I'd suggest uninstalling all spy/ad-ware through Add / Remove programs. New.net is one of them (comes with installation of Kazaa I believe). Also try uninstalling any download manager you may have, to make sure it's not causing the problems.

Did you find any information in the Event logs?

on my computer I went to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer and selected ie6setup and reinstalled. That didn't work either so I downloaded a new copy and that worked it seemed my ie6sp1 was corrupted. Just remember...
Downloading Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 using a non-Microsoft
download manager
------------------------------------------------------------------
During the Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 installation, Setup must download
components from the Internet. Users who are utilizing non-Microsoft
download managers (for example, Netzip, GetRight, or RealAudio's Download
Demon) will intercept download requests. This will cause Setup to abort.
To prevent this from occurring, disable non-Microsoft download managers
before running Setup.

I have nearly the same troubles,if it's even the same.
In our company is workstations conected via Microsoft Network. We have running samba server on linux and sharing computer resources over network. When i try to acces shared directory on another workstation in network, PC seems to hangUP.But after 5-15 min. the content of directory appears.
Sometimes it is nonsens to wait.I think the problem is somwhere in TCP/IP protocol, in one of its layer.Somewhere around microsoft networking and/or netbios/netbeui. I have no idea what to do,except reinstaling to w2k :(.
All other computers in network are w2k or NT4SP6 is there problem in communication between WinWP and non WinXP workstation...:( I'll must just try.

have tried all of the above - still no good!

AGHHHHHHHH!

All your left with then is a Reformat and Clean Install. From my experience a reformat and clean install will often fix up many strange types of unexplainable errors, when all else fails.
