Just installed Win XP Pro and everything works great except my HP9300i CD writer. Windows recognizes it but only as a CD-ROM. Downloaded the HP software for backups from HP's site except this doesn't allow me to do backups the way I'm used to. I usually create directories and subdirectories on my CD-RW and use it like just another drive. HP says they don't support 'direct letter access' ie. calling it the E: drive for purposes of writing to with XP. Also, HP's new software won't allow me to backup across a small network (a hard drive on another computer is mapped as my G: drive and this won't backup). Help??

HP products are pretty useless when it comes to Win XP, this is mainly because HP refuse to pay Microsoft any money. Meaning a shortage of product drivers and bad techinical support. Fiddle about with things, and you've more than likely got the job done.

Hi:

I can't help you with the networking portion of your problem, but on the CDRW, I believe that you might be able to correct that portion of your problem by deleting all traces of the software then re-loading it. If I am understanding what you posted, you should be able to create sub-directories. It appears that you are simply not able to write to the CDRW. That should be a problem of the CDRW software. That is why I suggesting that you re-load it.

Good luck!

I had a similar problem with my HP CD Writer Plus. Contact HP! They have two free utility downloads for Win XP - one performs the usual write functions (copy, data disk, etc.) and the other is a back-up to CD program. Both free.

HP responded to this question within 24 hrs, BTW.
