Firstly, i'm wondering how to remove or change the windows startup logo. I know that the file is logo.sys, or used to be in 95? I was able to change any bmp file to a startup pic by changing logo.sys . But it seems to be differnet in 98. The windows find feature does not find a logo.sys on either of the two comps i just tryed. Any ideas, how to remove it??

also a couple of things with MSCONFIG. I seem to have two entries of certain things in my startup. I have unticked them but was wondering how to get rid of them alltogether from the MSCONFIG startup tab. also does anyone know what these might be:
ctfmon.exe
ICSMGR
MO search
MDM7
Im trying to free up some system resources and have no idea what these are?

Thanks in advance
Cheers

Regarding Logo.sys, You won't find it. Windows loads it from somewhere else.....(perhaps someone can enlighten us?)
To remove it you can do two things:
The easiest is to create a file in notepad - just one character is enough - and rename it to logo.sys. Windows will try to load the file and fail - result = no splash screen.
The proper way is to locate the file msdos.sys. Right-click and change attributes to remove the read-only.
Open it in notepad and under the [Options] heading, add a new line:
Logo=0
Exit, saving the changes, and re-instate the read-only attribute.
My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Entries in the startup tab of MSCONFIG can be located in various places, the the 2 most common are:

1) Start->Programs->Startup
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The ones listed at the bottom of the startup tab in MSCONFIG are normally the ones in the startup folder. Any others can be deleted from the "RUN" key in the registry.

Sadsac,

MDM7 is the Machine debug Manger if you hacve Office XP or Visual studio.NET installed. It can be sagfely removed.

You may also need to go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Advanced tab and check "Disable script debugging" in Internet Explorer.

The logo comes from the hidden io.sys file in Windows 98. Here's how to create a new one:
These files are standard 256 color Windows bitmap files with dimensions of 320(w) x 400(h). You can use basically any image editing program to change them (as long as it supports BMP files).

Just make sure that the proportions of 320(w) x 400(h) are maintained. The file once finished should be 129,078 bytes.

Just open logow.sys in the c:\windows directory with MSPaint for an example.
