WIN SPM Direct-Connection Problem

Hello Again!

Ok, I got WINSPM. It is version 5 to use on my R3 processor and MLM007.
Hooked up a brand new DB9 cable (good and tight) and tried to direct connect. It is telling me that it isnt connecting and check the cord between two.

I tried the slower baud rate and set my password in the software. My serial is set to COM1. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have a 355 Adapter?

The baud rate should be 1200, on a good day, it can be 2400,
and the rest is None, 8, 1.

 

Uh Oh!

I just have a straight DB9 male/female hooked between the laptop and the MLM007.

What is non/8/1?

Secondly... I guess this is a more important questions, but will I be able to access the greetings as files with SPM? So that I can upload and download them?

Well, you can not access the MLM-007 with WINSPM.

WINSPM is for programming the LEGEND, not the MLM-007.

-AND- the MLM-007 can not be programmed by the serial port.

The serial port is used only for maintenance operations, such as determining how the system is programmed. Programming can not be changed by access to that port.

To connect to that port, you would use HYPERTERM, or PROCOMM or some type of com program.

The BAUD rates I quoted were for WINSPM and the ADMIN PORT to the LEGEND.

NONE, 8 & 1, refer to PARITY, DATA BITS, and STOP BITS.

Is there a pin out for the Merlin Mail console (COM) port? I cannot find any specs for for this DB9-DB9 cable. Can you help? Thank you!

It is just a standard DB9-pin serial cable - nothing special. On the PC - you need to run Hyperterminal and configure it to use COM1 at 1200 baud, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, xon/xoff protocol.

Wow, a response within 10 minutes! Unbelievable!

I have a soldering iron in my hands and I lost count on how many standards I found for "modem cables" on the web. Every "modem cable" I found is DB9 female to DB25 male.

I just want to fabricate my own DB9 female to DB9 female cable to eliminate all the unknowns in DB25-DB9 converter collection in my desk. (hand-shaking, full hand-shaking, no handshake, etc.)

This DOESN'T work:

3 - 3
4 - 4
5 - 5
6 - 6
7 - 7
8 - 8

Can anybody show us what DOES work? THANK YOU!
 
This isn't a "modem" cable per se - just a plain DB9 to DB9 serial cable. You can get one at any Radio Shack .

The gender assignments are Male to Female. I just wanted to add that, since that arrangement became unclear somewhere along this thread.
 
Radio Shack shows a #26-152 cable as "Serial RS-232C DB9 F/F shielded" that I'll try tonight. Maybe we can get a pinout ffrom it if it works. Thanks for the help.
 
Here is a question for ya, where you plugging it into the phone system? The admin port on the processor?

Merlin Mail COM1 (DB9 female) connector adjacent to the Brooktrout voice cards connecting to a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop.

History:
Our small business bought a used Merlin Legend (R3 v.10.3) system and the associated external Merlin Mail R3 device. The switch is cleared and I'm learning about setting it up from the extensive PDF manuals available from Avaya.

Now I am trying to clear the Mail system back to defaults too. I want to dump the existing setup (to learn from) and then begin at square 1. I understand the dump procedure is done from the COM1 port (@ 1200/8/N/1/ XonXoff) from HyperTerm.

I'm probably making this harder than it needs to be, but I learn by doing and time is NOT of the essence on this project!

I GREATLY appreciate the help and knowledge shared on this forum. Our $ contribution will follow our installation.
 
WinSPM connection should be to the processor module's ADMIN port. Not the Mail module. You can talk to the Merlin Mail, but not by using direct connect/Winspm. So you are using HyperTerm, right?
 
Ok, I found and built the solution; works like a champ.

"When using Software Flow Control(XON, XOFF); you only need 3 lines, TX (data), RX (data), and GND. XON being equal to ready, XOFF equal to not ready."

To build the data cable between the Merlin Mail COM1 port and your PC serial port, all you need is;
2 - 3
3 - 2
5 - 5
