We have recently deployed new Dell Latitude C600 Notebooks with Win NT 4 Workstation SP5. At shutdown (usually when notebook connected to its docking station sits idle) the users experience the hourglass. They wait several minutes with no activity. Some have waited overnight and came in the next morning with the same hourglass. We have tried to do a CTRL + ALT + DEL and are met with an unlock password screen so as to unlock the user. Once we apply our password, it takes us back to WIN NT operating as normal. At that point when we try to shutdown, it is successful only taking about 30 to 45 seconds. We applied SP6a on a machine experiencing this problem and that machine still had the same problem last night. There is currently not a screensaver set nor password protection. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not too sure. Try to hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose TASK MANAGER. Look to see if there are any tasks running while the workstation is trying to shut down.

Also, make sure the users are closing all programs before shutting down.

We have had the same problem and there is a fix on the microsoft support site. Search for "q245148i" and download it. This should do it.
