Win Explorer left screen is blank

Hi,
On an Win2K machine when i open Windows explorer the left screen (which usually shows the directories)is just grey. There is no directories or Sud-dirextories.

This machine belongs to one of the developers in my company and I've heard it happens when .dll's conflict but he says he hasn't loaded new software.
Is there any programs that fix dll issues or any suggestions

I had a similar problem on Win98se for months a while back. I upgraded Internet Explorer to IE6 (for other reasons) and the directories reappeared in Windows Explorer. Coincidental?
