I am trying to get a pc to recognize a new USB switch. It looks like the 98 se software is either corrupt or so old that it cant find the drivers. How do I update the Oper.system?
It is not attached to the Internet, since I cannot get the software to attach the driver to the modem. another problem that makes me think the software is corrupt.
Will I have to delete and then reinstall win98?
and where can I get a cd for the Win98 latest version

Question: When the os goes thru the setup of attaching a driver to a device, does anyone know why the os would not find the driver even when I give it the path etc. and I know it exists. What module (pgm) is exec. when it tries to find the driver

YOu have the latest SE CD.

When you attach the device does SE recognize that the device has been attached. If not, your USB isn't working.

yes, the USB works since When I plug the Printer by itself into the usb I can prinht. It is when I put the new device a USB Peripheral switch in it will not recognize it. When it goes thru the new device setup, it will not find any driver, even when I say it is in ex: D:\Win98\ etc etc.....

is there an INF file in the "D:\Win98\ etc etc....." directory??
Device Drivers use/need inf files for installation.

Uninstall any software related to the device, then reboot fully and then reboot into Safe Mode.... and see if there are 2 or more (ghosts/phantoms) of the same "switch" you're trying to install in the same device "type" area of DeviceManager. Remove all instances and try again

Could run the "Update Driver" wizard from within Device Manager >> Device >> Properties >> Driver tab..
USB devices when connected use more than 1 device "type" in Device manager most times (for ex; an external USB CDRW will place 3 diff entries into device man. - 1 under Hard disk Controllers, 1 under CDROM, and 1 under USB)

perhaps you can tell us more about your setup..ie; you're trying to install a USB modem? - or a switch and a modem?
