I have recently installed win 98 and on my computer. Now I have 2 problems.

1. When the sound card is to be installed win98 needs additional files from win 98 second edition. I don´t have those files. So my soundcard doesn´t work.

2. I have a 120 Gb HD and I tried to fix it with the patch so that I could have larger discs than 64 Gb. But, when I run the self-extract file... It does something, but what it does I don´t know. However it prompts me to restart the computer... But what then`????????

Don't quite understand this post:-

1. You've installed win98 - so you have a win98 install CD? If this is first edition, why would installing soundcard need files from second edition? If it is second edition, then you should have said files. What's the missing bit from your story?

2. If you wanted to use the fix to fdisk to allow support of > 64GB partition to install into, you need to use the updated fdisk to create the partition for your win98 installation in the first place (the file on M$ site will update a win98 installation - so in your case as you've run it, the fdisk on your hard drive will now support up to 137GB partitions - you need to put it on boot floppy and start from scratch if you want a 120GB partition. If you just want to create an extended partition for the rest of your filestore, you should now be able to do that).
PS. You can open the M$ file with winzip - there are 2 files fdisk.98g (for first edition) and .98s (for second). Just rename appropriate one as fdisk.exe.

What sort of sound card is it, Whigga? All you should have to do is go to the website of the manufacturer and download the latest Windows ’98 compatible drivers. That should solve it. If you have ’98 and it’s asking for ‘98SE files, it sounds to me like somewhere along the line, somebody has messed up the installation on that machine :(

As for your HDD issues, what size it the drive registering as in the BI/OS? That’s the important first step that a lot of people overlook. If your motherboard isn’t seeing the drive properly, the best OS in the world is going to have a hard time making any more sense of it. As with any new component, you’ve got to start from the board and work your way up.

That aside, it’s usually a good idea to have a partition on a large drive, JUST for the OS, so, partition say 5Gb or so and install Windows on that, then use the rest of the space in 40Gb chunks, see if that overcomes the patching issues you’ve been having.

Specs for computer:

MB: ASUS A7V333
RAM : Samsung 333MHz DDR 256 Mb
HD: 120GB
CPU: AMD XP+ 2000
AGP: ASUS V8460 ULTRA DELUXE Ti4600 128MB TV-in/out DVI(Remote chance that AGP has anything to do with it)

I have a 5Gb partition for windows and this would be how I would partition if I could.

System: 5Gb
Work: 5Gb
Other: 101Gb

But with fat32
System: 5Gb
Work: 5Gb
Other: 43Gb
Other 43Gb
Other 5Gb

And not to forget

Soundcard: SB-Live! 1024
