Win 98 Network Adapter

Hi All,

I am stuck, I am running windows 98 and have a d-link dfe530tx+ net card. I had to remove the nic to find out what driver i needed to install it. any way when i plugged it back into the computer, Win 98 won't recognize it. I've tried removing it from other devices in safe mode and it still won't recognize it. tried restoring the registry to a previous day, still won't recognize. HELP!!!
Where to go from here.

Are you sure you have it seated firmly in the slot? You did have the power off when you took it out and re-installed it, didn't you? Jim

Take the card back out and make sure all traces are gone in Device Manager. Also take a quick look to make sure under your network properties.

You might have damaged the card. Try another PCI slot on the motherboard when you put it back in. If you still can't get it to detect, then either try it in another PC or consider formatting/reinstalling Windows.

Have you tried Add New Hardware in Control Panel? See if it is detected there.

tried another slot, also removed all traces in dev manager and network properties. i'm trying to avoid ffr at all costs. Any other suggestions. I'm going to try a diff net card just for the heck of it. But this card was working in another sys.

Try removing the card and then removing it from the device manager. reboot the system without the card and check the device manager and network properties to make sure it's gone. Make sure your BIOS is set for a plug and play OS. Reinstall the card in another slot if possible and start the computer. If it does not find the card you should not have any entries in the other devices tab of device manager.

oh also it only show up in dev manager in safe mode. SO i remove it in safe mode then restart and check it in normal mode nothing there and it doesn't detect it, but the go into safe mode and it's under other devices again.
Haven't tried add hardware yet, usually have no luck with it but i'll try

There's your problem. The adapter is being replaced each time you reboot (in safe mode). You might have to kill it a couple times, so leave the card out and restart into safe mode a few times. If it keeps coming back, then it's not the card that's the problem - it's Windows.

This is direct from D-Link's support site:

I can´t install the NIC driver on Win95/98.

1. Restart the PC and press the F8 key. Then select the "Safe Mode" prompt.

2. Execute the diagnostic program from the driver disk. If the diagnostic program can´t find your NIC, please shutdown your PC, remove and re-insert the NIC into the PCI slot.

3. Go into Safe Mode prompt and run the diagnostic program again. If the program finds the NIC, please run the diagnostic adapter function to test whether the NIC is defective or not.

4. Restart the PC and go into Windows. The NIC should be detected.

Had a similar problem with installation of one of these cards, disappeared after a couple of days. Removed then re-seated and it showed up again.

hey, thanks pudda, good info. after all my troubleshooting I got sick of it and just swapped with one of my other nic's and got them both working. Thanks for all the input.
