Got a problem with a Win 98 machine that's driving me crazy. I can't fix it and the folks who have the warranty are stumped, too.
It's a Celeron 466 machine with a 4GB HD and 64 MB RAM. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-6VMML and the computer is connected to our network with TCP/IP.
Every morning when the user turns it on, they get a system freeze, usually right at the point where the disclaimer screen -- "Do not attempt to long on unless you are an authorized user of this network" -- comes on. Screen locks, mouse and keyboard won't work, everything jammed tight. If the user then does a hard reboot (power off, power on), everything is fine. They are able to log onto the network, get to the desktop, e-mail, etc., with no more trouble. I am stumped, though, as to why they get that initial freeze EVERY morning.
I must add that this particular computer has been a problem child for a while. For a while, it had a hard time holding IP addresses (we use DHCP and for no reason, it would just periodically drop its lease and would need a renew all to get it back), but mysteriously fixed itself. It also developed a problem where any attempt to access the floppy drive would cause a system freeze/crash/BSOD (depending on the day or the week or which way the wind was blowing) that required a new motherboard. Now this.
Does anyone have any ideas?
