Win 98 Defrag 1

When I start defrag in Win 98, I never see any progress (reguardless how long it runs.) Is there a bad spot on the hard drive? The system is an HP w/ an 8 GB drive and 6 GB FREE.

No your hard drive probably isn't bad. The defrag program is probably getting interupted by a program writing to the drive. It could be a program loading at start up. For best results, boot into safe mode then defrag the drive. If it still doesn't work, I'd check for viruses and then check for drive errors. It will appear to run slower in safe mode, but it will probably finish!

I would boot in safe mode F5 and run scandisk "standard"
then run defrag. You probably have a disk utility or some other program accessing your drive. You might want to disable your screen saver first as well.

Yes run under SAFE MODE.. If fact it will finish faster there. And even faster with the screen saver off...

actually, you don't even need to boot into safe mode. just do a crtl, alt + delete. end the task on everything but explorer and systray. those are the only 2 things that win 98 needs to have running. then run the defrag on the drive and you should see progress...also make sure that you turn your screen saver off.

In a situation like this, it's always a good time for the good ol' barely-documented MSCONFIG utilitly. Do a START:RUN and type MSCONFIG and hit enter.

A small utility is invoked with several tabs. Click on the STARTUP (?) tab and a list of all the utilities that have self-configured to run automatically from the registry should appear, each with a check mark in a box next to it. You can uncheck those pesky utilites that you do not want to run, and many times this will eliminate problems, speed up performance, and free up memory. Be careful not to disable your virus software if this is important to you, or other utitlies you consider to be important. If you see a file running and are not sure what it is, run the file name through google and you generally should get enough solid hits back to help you determine what software it is related to.
