Place the Win 98 win.com file in the Win 95 sr0 folder, run setver to set the DOS version number to 7.10 for win.com, enter WIN and Windows starts (with registry problems). How much difference is there in the basic OS's?
Internet Explorer 4.0 comes pre-installed on Windows 98.
IE4 is also fully integrated into Windows 98.
Registry Checker comes with Windows 98 and now checks, backs up, and fixes the registry during boot.
FAT32 and FAT32 convertor. FAT32 is a new file system which replaces the old FAT or FAT16. FAT32 is a much better file allocation table because it can support disks up to 2 terabytes or 2048 gigabytes in size on a single parition, compared to the 2GB limit previously imposed. FAT32 uses smaller clusters (that is, 4K clusters for drives up to 8 GB in size), resulting in 10 to 15 percent more efficient use of disk space relative to large FAT16 drives. FAT32 has the ability to relocate the root directory and use the backup copy of the FAT instead of the default copy. In addition, the boot record on FAT32 drives has been expanded to include a backup of critical data structures. This means that FAT32 drives are less susceptible to a single point of failure than existing FAT16 volumes. The root directory on a FAT32 drive is now an ordinary cluster chain, so it can be located anywhere on the drive. For this reason, the previous limitations on the number of root directory entries no longer exist. In addition, FAT mirroring can be disabled, allowing a copy of the FAT other than the first one to be active. These features allow for dynamic resizing of FAT32 partitions. Note, however, that while the FAT32 design allows for this capability, it will not be implemented by Microsoft in the initial release.
Windows 98 also features a form of electronic tv guide, which means if you have a tv tuner and an internet connection you can get tv listings.
Windows Scripting host or WSH provides support for both Windows and command line based scripting, thus script execution can be accomplished by either double clicking on the script file within the Windows Explorer, or by typing the script name at the command prompt.
There is more to this:
Win98 comes with support for VPN, Dial-up server, dial-up ATM support, and many more. It also has a useful utility called "System Information", which helps a great deal in troubleshooting. Built into that are quite a few tools, eg: DirectX diagnostic tool. Win98 also has built in Themes now...there is quite a bit that in new and interesting. Also the new registry checker can save your neck. Let's say you installed some new software and it messes up your settings, or you just happen to make a mess of some settings and have no idea where you went wrong...just do a reboot to DOS and at the prompt type "scanreg". It will run the DOS version of the registry checker, which will allow you to "Create Backups" or "View Backups". You can go into View Backups, and from there you can restore a previous version of your registry. It usually has backups for the past 5 days, so it's your choice.
and it can go haywire & continually "restore" bad copies of your registry at bootup for some unknown reason....we thought we'd fixed the problem when we did a flop boot & cloned another computer's HDD over this one; but the problems back again.......may end up having to send the whole system back where it came from..........
(speaking of the Registry & system file checkers......not to mention that it will restore bad settings to your startup files if you intentionally re-edit them to be more efficient & eliminate misbehaving sequences.............
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller.
