Win 8 desktop used as a server permissions question 1

I am using a Win 8 desktop as a server. It's been setup and working fine for 6 months. All the workstations are running Win 7. I had the scanner hooked to an old XP machine and decided to move it to the server machine. Now when I scan to the same folder as before it doesn't show up in windows explorer on the workstations. If I copy the file to a different folder and then copy it back, it shows up on all the workstations. I feel like this is a permissions issue but all the workstations have permission to access the folder. It's only when I scan a file from the server that it doesn't show up.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Does it help if you redo the Sharing Permissions of any destination folder making sure that the "Everyone" group has access. Besides the Sharing side of things you can also make sure that the actual NTFS Access Permissions allow "Everyone" access.

Sometimes files from other computers have an "Unblock" check box that is ticked, this can be seen when you right-click on the file and select Properties (it is near the bottom of the page).

Have you tried placing your "download source", if prudent and applicable, and from a local known source, in the Trusted Zone" of IE or any third party Firewall?

The folder is set to Everyone. For some reason when I scan from the server into the folder, the file doesn't inherit the folders permissions. If I change the file permissions manually it works.

Is this "folder" in the root of the drive? If so, does it help if you move it down one level?

I'm surprised nobody has chimed in about "not using a desktop operating system as a server".

Well, it sounds like "server" here isn't really the right term. It's just file sharing, right?

LimitedTech,
What happens when one of the Win 7 desktops copies a file into that folder? Are the other Win 7 desktops able to see it? If so, then we need more info on how the scanned file is being copied to the folder. Is it by a program running locally on the Win 8 desktop? What's the program's name?

It is a program running locally on the Win 8 Machine. Visioneer One Touch 4.0 it came with the scanner. I use the same software if scanning from the Win 8 "server" or one of the Win XP "workstation"

If a Win 7 (or XP) machine copies a file into the folder everyone can see it as intended. AND if I copy the file I scanner locally on the win 8 machine into a folder on another PC and copy it back everyone will be able to see it.

Under which user logon are you using the Windows 8 "server" to run the scan?

When scanning from a "workstation" you would naturally use a User account, but it seems likely on the "server" an Administrator account would be used, perhaps?

Switch accounts on the Windows 8 machine to a User, and then run a scan to see if this accounts for the problem.

I have tried several accounts on the "server" (admin and user) all have the same problem.

Scan a document into the shared folder on Windows 8 "server". If you then go to one of the workstations and type the path including the file name of the scaned file, will it open?

\\Windows8PcName\ShareName\FolderName\ScannedFile.PDF

Are all of the machines in the same Workgroup or Domain?

Are you using any of the doofy file sharing features added to try to simplify things for Joe Home User? Stuff like "HomeGroup" or "Simple File Sharing" or ...?

dilettante - Not using any of the doofy stuff just a straight folder with "everyone" permissions. All PCs are in the same Workgroup.

goombawaho - That is a good idea to try. I will have to hook the scanner back up to the "server" in the morning. Will post results after.

Right - it doesn't actually solve your problem but it will tell whether the workstations can open the file and thus the issue would be the hidden status, much like the post I just started which was triggered by your thread.

Also, here's another suggestion. In the scanner software settings, set the destination using the UNC path for the share. So instead of C:\SharedFolder, you would change it to \\Windows8PcName\ShareName\FolderName (using Goom's example above).

Not sure if it will make any difference (and really, it shouldn't), but its worth a shot!

No idea why that made a difference, but glad it did!

Unfortunately (well not normally but for this instance) my browser clears history when I close it. I read an article in my web searches about a related issue on the NTFS file system. Not sure if it's the same because they were using a different program but it sounded very similar.
