I just bought a laptop with win 7 home installed. I just created a recovery flash drive too. Right after I did the recovery set I installed 35 updates, then there was listed on the screen "25,572" update operations. It looked to me as though win7 was being completely redone on the system. Is that true?

What does "update operations" mean? Do I have to redo the recovery drive again?

I know this is not an XP question but I couldn't find a Win 7 forum.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. I hope I explained my problem well enough.

25,572" update operations.

Was that a sort of running total being displayed on a black screen at boot time after the updates went in. I have seen similar entries when the Registry is being amended by installed updates.

What do you mean by recovery drive? If it is a complete PC backup (on a flash drive which is unlikely), then obviously any such backup, while still viable, would not be up to date. Complete PC backups are not a once only thing, you need to perform them regularly to benefit from such a backup. If all you did was to backup some data files to a flash drive, while the same principle applies, you probably are less out of date at this moment in time.

Thanks for the input. I checked wolluf's forum and did not know which to read.

As far as the recovery drive, it was recommended in the manual to make a recovery dvd from the laptop. As I do not wish to work with, or carry around, many dvds I bought a 16GB flash drive. I went into start, my toshiba, create recovery media (or something like that). I don't have the laptop on right now as I am using the internet. Anyway, creating this recovery "drive" as I call it, it was 11.6 GB in size and fit on the flash drive. The book stated in creating this recovery set it would copy only the OS files, drivers, etc needed to reinstall from if needed.

What I need to know is if the last updates were newer drivers, OS files, etc? I know MS has a long history of updating many files at a time but are any of them required to do a recovery/reinstall which are NOT on my flash drive?

Sorry I haven't made myself clear. New at laptops and their quirks.

Again, thanks in advance.

The recovery files you have on your flash drive will restore your computer to a factory install condition. IF you ever use that to restore your hard drive, you will have to reapply all the Windows patches. There is no recovery option to cretae a new set of recovery disks/flash drive image after you have updated the system. You can make a backup of your boot drive, but that will be larger than 11GB!

You said earlier that you could not find a Windows 7 forum. wolluf was pointing you to it.
