I'm running an HP G71 laptop, Windows 7, 64-bit, 4GB RAM, Cisco-Linksys 2000 Router, HP LaserJet 5000n printer. I hooked up (hardwire) the printer and windows 7 automatically saw it using the standard and universal drivers. When I try to print anything it chokes and doesn't ever get to the printer or shall I say the printers display doesn't shown anything, when you open up the printer it does show it but it has an error and wont print.

It seems like I have tried everything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It seems like I have tried everything.
Well, you've certainly not listed everything then. What is the "everything" you've tried?

Have you tried downloading the driver install package direct from HP?

According to this link:

It may not directly be supported under Windows 7.

If it were me, I believe I'd try using the Vista 64 bit installer, and see how it goes:

Otherwise, take a look starting from the OS selection for that model. You may have to attempt installing/running the driver from Windows XP mode as well.

When I open the HP 5000n print icon, after sending a test page, it says "printing - error" under "status".

The HP 5000 does have an internal JetDirect 600N card installed.

When you installed the Printer was it installed as a Wireless Printer or USB connected Printer?

In the Printer Properties what Port is it using? LPT1 or a TCP/IP one?

With a Wireless Printer if the Port used is incorrect nothing prints.

By hardwire do you mean it is connected to the Router, or is it a USB connection to the actual computer?

If you are connected to a Router, wirelessly or wired, can you Ping the Printer and get a response, or can you type in the IP Address via your Browser and open the Printer's Configuration and Status page in your Browser?

When I installed the printer, I plugged in the Cat-5 cable from the Jet Direct Card in the rear of the printer and plugged it into the router at this point is when the computer saw it.
My laptop always runs wireless to the router.
I believe that the printer is using com-1 port.
The printer is not physically connected to the computer.
I will need to wait until I get back home to try to ping it.

Hmm, if you've never connected directly to the printer, it wouldn't hurt attempting to connect via USB, and see how that goes. Then if you get it resolved over USB, you can retry the ethernet connection.

Did you set the jet direct card up with a static IP? never had much luck network printing in a pure dhcp environment.

You should be able to print the status page from the printer or see what IP address the printer received from the router and then check that the printer settings on the computer point to that IP address for the standard TCP/IP port

Devices and Printers -> Add Printer -> Add a local printer -> Create a new port: -> Type of port: Local Port -> in the ‘Enter a port name:’ textbox type the exact path to the network based printer you want to connect to, e.g.

\\192.168.1.15\hpdj5000n

Note1: with double slashes in front!;
Note2: type in the exact name of the printer as shared on the host machine, that is ‘hpdj5550s’, not let say ‘hp deskjet 5550 series’ or something similar!
