Win 2K will not load to desktop...?

Hello!

I have a dual-boot system, "Win 2K Gaming," (for games) and "Win 2K Video," (for video editing). The computer is NOT hooked up to the internet, though I occasionally do hook it up... always using the "Win 2K Gaming" partition, which thus has alot of free anti-virus, anti-spamware installed that slows startup.

Anyhow, I also have an old, unstable IBM harddrive that had a few files I wanted to pull off, so I hooked it up to my system, booted into the "win 2K Gaming" partition, and copied off the files. When I did bootup, several windows from the harddrive opened, and I got a message that my system 'detected a new device, restart for changes to take effect.' Since the old, hooked-up harddrive is not stable, I just quickly copied the files I needed right then and there, shut down the system, then unhooked the old harddrive (ie, I didn't "restart to allow changes to take effect").

When I tried to restart/reboot into the "Gaming" system, it booted into desktop to the point where it starts to load all that free anti-spyware, then locked up.

I tried several more times, and it wouldn't even load to desktop, stopping at the Win2K "splash screen." I tried RE-intalling the old harddrive, thinking it needed to "RE-detect" the 'new device,' but no change. I tried SafeMode, but it also wouldn't load to the desktop.

I tried the Win2K install disk, to make repairs, but it wouldn't 'detect previous installations.' I tried using the RecoveryConsole, and while it shows both installations, when I click on "c://Gaming" it again just hangs, refusing to load into that partition so I can repair it.

So... How do I boot, how do I repair this situation?

THANKS, THANKS, THANKS!!!

This is so weird! I've never even heard of such a thing...

Left my computer try to boot up over the New Year, and it was hanging for 12 hours on the "windows is starting" screen.

And I can't 'Repair' or even 'Reinstall' windows using the install disks; it also won't "detect previous installations," or, when I choose "c://gaming" it also hangs.

What in the hell could cause this? I can't find ANYTHING in the MS site database. How can I not even REPAIR or REINSTALL???

If you can load into the win2k video one and go to this site below and do a full system scan.

Then put your system disc in and close any windows it loads and run sfc/scannow. In case your disc has a differnet service pack then what your using follow this link to make a newer one.

Then put your system disc in and close any windows it loads and run sfc/scannow. "

Thanks...not quite sure how to do this, though!

Tried it through Start>Run, but no go. Found a "sfc.exe" in the "Gaming">winnt folder, but it didn't do anything either...

So where/how do I run sfc/scannow?

THANKS!

Put system disc in, close any windows it loads. Now go to start, run, then type cmd and hit enter or press ok. When the black screen "command prompt" loads, type this exactly as follows sfc/scannow.

If it still does not run let me know.

Okay, I tried the sfc/scannow option (changed the prompt to "c:" in the command window, since it's the c: OS that is screwed up), but no change; it still hangs at startup.

Did you run housecall?"

Not yet, will hopefully do so tomorrow... (must transport system to high speed connection) You're thinking it's a virus?

Possibly, but at the moment im not really sure. Im just using step by step process in hoping to eventually come across what might be causing it.

If you haven't logged in, have you tried the Last Known Good option from the boot menu?

Trend found 2 viruses, deleted them. I ran the scan again to be sure, system was clean.

Win2K Gaming still won't boot to desktop; still hangs just before. Still can't repair or even reinstall, as the OS CD's won't recognize previous installations.

I can't load another profile, as I idiotically never made backup profiles... sure wish I had now!

Crazy!

Try going into repair console, run chkdsk and defrag. Try running sfc/scannow from the repair mode as well again just for safe measures. If this does not help them at the moment im out of ideas besides formatting but see if anyone has any other ideas.

The thing is, I can't get to the RecoveryConsole...

When I'm on the screen where you choose (in my case) "C://Gaming" or "D://Filmmaking," if you choose "C" it hangs, just like it does when it 'searches for previous installations,' and when it tries to regular boot into the OS.
