My son-in-law cannot log in to his computer. Windows 2K pro keeps rejecting his password. He is set up as the admin. and he's not on a network. He uses this computer for his contracting business and is worried about his files. Also, he thinks he has the klez virus. Will klez do this? If not, how do we go about getting windows to recognize his password. Thanks.

It is highly unlikely that the klez virus is causing this problem. It is a mailing virus and doesn't usually alter files except for itself and any antivirus programs you may run. Although I wouldn't rule out the possiblity that a different virus is causing the problem.
The problem is more likely that your son in law has forgotten his password or is typing it with the caps lock button on.
Remember that Win2k has strict security protocols, even when the computer is not attached to the network. The username and password must be input exactly as set up or there is no way into the PC. Password files can be cracked but this is difficult. One possibility is using another username to get into the PC, if another is set up.
If all else fails then re-install Win2k into a different install directory and recover the data. Microsoft have some good advice on how to perform a 'paralell' install.

Will.

Looking at McAfee's profile of virus, no mention of password corruption - your son-in-law may have forgotten it or is typing it in wrong (remember it is case sensitive). Has he no other user set up on the machine? There is a tool here to enable resetting of password from a bootable CD (without knowing existing password).

I have also seen that when some software packages are installed for some reason will disable admin passwords. I know that Ghost will do that sometimes and I assume that others do as well. Also, I always have an admin user added to all machines that is not common knowledge but are there for a back door so to speak. You could do this in the future and hide the additional username and password in a safe or someother secure location.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm going to his house tonight armed with a Klez fix tool,a Win 2K ERD,a different keyboard, the Win 2K pro CD and anything else I can think of between now and then.

Thanks for the link Wolluf, I D/L'ed the files, but can't get them on 1 floppy-any idea why? They should just fit,but I get the "floppy full" message before the files are all copied. If I can't figure this out I'll have to re-install Win 2K for him.

You just used the rawrite2 utility with the bd011022.bin file? (As in 'rawrite2 -f bd011022.bin -d A:' from command prompt). Did you format disk first (full, not quick) - I had a problem with an 'empty' floppy - but was ok after I formatted it (from command prompt again - ie, format a: - though don't know if this matters).

Up-date: Went to my son-in-laws last night. Booted his computer, typed in his password-BINGO-computer booted just fine. He was screwing up his password. Thanks to all for your help. This is a very good forum.
