Hello everyone,

I have a problem that may be simple but I have exhausted my primitive knowledge and now I turn to you for help.

Here is my hardware configuration:

Intel D845GERG2 mainboard (Integrated LAN, AUDIO, VIDEO)
Intel P4 1.8 CPU
Kingston 256 DDR2100 Ram
Maxtor 40 Gig 7200 HD
Generic 52X CDROM
1.44 Floppy
Generic Keyboard
Microsoft Optical scroll mouse

This is a fresh install of Win 2K professional...

I inserted the Win 2K cd and booted to CDROM to start the installation process. The installation appeared to install correctly. I inserted the supplied Intel drivers CD and started the process of installing all of the integrated Intel drivers. During the process I was asked to reboot 3 times, after the 3rd reboot the computer freezes during boot up.

Here are the troubleshooting steps that I went through to:
1.) I replaced the CPU with another P4 1.8
2.) I replaced the memory with brand new 256 DDR2100
3.) I replaced the IDE cable (because I couldn't think of anything else to do)

None of these steps fixed the freezing problem. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what the problem could be?

My own Win2K installs have always started with the set of 4 boot diskettes. Have you tried that method?
also - try a different, slower, CD-ROM drive. The super-fast CD-ROM may be causing the CPU brain freeze. And, use the Compatibility Check option on the CD to see what part of your hardware might not be Win2K compatible.

Thanks for your reply.

Just becqause I'm stubborn, I inserted the Win2K CD and went thru setup again . This time the setup took fine and everything seems to be working now. I am indeed stumped but as long as its working...

its a driver issue. you should contact intel ask tech support for the fix

Is this a new case, or new parts in an old case? Could it be that problems begin after it gets thoroughly warmed up? Are you running with the cover off or on? proper cooling airflow is usually better with the cover on, but if that's when you have problems, remove the cover and have a regular house fan flowing on the board and drives, see if you have a cooling problem that shows up during continued operation. also make sure that the fan in your power supply, and any other fans, are connected and running.
