Hi, I have a peer to peer home network (pent II 450 and Cyrix M2 PR300) previously worked flawlessly with win98SE, just installed win 2000 prof and am having problems. Both have only TCP/IP installed, the machines see each other, and I can start to transfer files, then the machines freeze and loose the network connection after about 1-4mb of transfer! I had one machine on win 2000 and one on win 98se and this worked fine. There are no interrupt conflicts. Anyone have any bright ideas??? The Cyrix machine does only have 32mb ram (soon to have another 32) could this be partially responsible??

Many thanks

I should add I get the same problem whether I use Netbui or TCP/IP. Internet sharing and printer sharing seems to work fine, it's just file transfering that doesn't seem to work properly.

Dannz,
you may try removing and reinstalling the TCP/IP on both machines. Reconfigure after installing then see if this still happends.
If so then check for updated drivers. Win2k already has a patch about 83 or so MB. Don't know what it covers yet, but you can check it out at Anyway, if it stills happends I suggest the you but the nics to the test but using ping -t {IP address} and see if they still lock up after a while.

Good luck, and please post results :)

Have a nice day. [sig][/sig]

Thanks for your help. I have tried both the things you suggest, I've reinstalled win 2000 completely twice, as well as reinstalling TCP/IP. I installed the servicepack on both machines with no luck. If I ping one machine from the other it works fine at first, then once I go back and browse files it still freezes, if I try to ping then it times out!

I've decided to go back to win 9x anyway, this is just too much trouble! Besides, I found out that win 2000 prof had used 64mb of resources even before I'd run any applications - this is one heck of a lot more than win 9x! I also play a few games, and although I've not had any problems with compatability, the directx performance doesn't seem as good as win 9x (open GL on Quake 3 seem pretty good though).

Thanks again

I shudder at the thought of running W2k with 32 MEGS. Probably runs out of resources as it caches the data for transfer. I would guess that this is your main problem. [sig]
Al
atc-computing@home.com

[/sig]

Thanks for your input, I think you are probably right, I was only running it temporarily with 32mb on the second machine (my other has 128!). As you'd expect, the machine with 32mb was painfully slow! [sig][/sig]

Have you tried checking if your cables are working fine? It might help if you take a peek at it...
