I just recently got a netgear rt314 cable router. I am tring to network my home computer which is win Me and my laptop which is win 2000 professional. I need help doing so. I don't know what to do can someone please help.

Way to generic of a question for this subject. Both computers have network cards installed correct? What kind of modem is connected to the router, DSL or Cable modem? Do you have a static IP address from your ISP or is it a DHCP adress? Do you have the proper cables to connect from the router to each computer? i.e. CAT5 or 5e? What have you done so far?

More info needed.

YOu will have to setup a work group and make sure both machines are in the same workgroup with the same username/password on each computer just to name a few.

I just want to be able to get info from both computers. I have them set up with cable router cat 5

Do they both have internet connectivity? If so, just make them part of the exacte same workgroup and share something like a folder or drive.

If you connect your stations direct with CAT5-cable you need a crossed cable to get it

Try it

He's connecting to a router, you only need a crossover cable if you are trying to connect 2 computers without a router.

I cant find my Win 9x hat, so I am going from old memmory here. Come up with any name for the work group other than the name of a User. i.e. If you login name to 2000 is John, do not use John as the workgroup name. Something like MyNet is fine. Your call

On the ME box right click network neiborhood and select properties, there should be (again if I remember right) a tab called workgroup. Enter the name you came up with in filed. As far as the 2000 box right click on My computer and go to Properties, there is a tab I believe called Computer Name, there you will find a change button to change the workgroup name.

Again, this is all from memory as I only have XP Pro in front of me, can tell you more wont I get home so I can see for sure.
