I have posted this to the Win 2000 forum without result so will try here.
I have a user with a new Sony CRX 175A1 burner in a P4 running Win 2000 pro SP2. It is on secondary master with a dvd rom as slave and is recognised fine by the BIOS. It is also recognised by Win 2000, model name/number is correct but 2000 thinks it is just a CD Rom and will not recognise it as a burner. Have swapped the burner for a brand new one, same result. I am not overly familiar with 2000 and am a bit lost here but all the settings in properties etc look ok, can anybody help? All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Try installing burner software,ie: Adaptec, Nero...

windows 2000 doesn't have any software for cd-burners built in. It should only recognize it as a cd drive. The same thing that would happen on any machine besides a windows xp machine. As mainegeek stated, install some cd-burning software and try burning a cd.

Sorry, should have made that clear, Nero 5 is installed, I have also downloaded and attempted to use Sony's burner testing program. Both of these say that the drive is not a CD-RW All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

mikecx,
Thanks for the reply, there is some stuff there that may be useful, although the BurnRights utility appears to be only to give non admin users burning rights and this problem is also apparent when logged on as admin. I also do not think it is a Nero problem as the Sony diagnostic utility also fails to recognise it and that is independent of any other software. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

This is not my system and unfortunately I do not have access to it at the moment but I am pretty sure VirtualCD is not installed. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Thanks to everybody who replied, problem solved, apparently this model burner is slightly different in the Australian version (which this is) and requires Nero 5.5.5, also the version of the Sony test utility which I have came from the US support site and will not work with this burner, the Ausralian version is required. Thanks to Sony Austalia tech support, a free call and very helpful. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

EXACTLY the same problem that I am having now.

The only difference in my case is that it USED to work proerly, but the problem appeared after I started using flash memory stick on this PC. After that Nero (v. 5.5.3) stopped recognizing my external CD-burner as such. :(

I tried uninstalling/installing both hardware and Nero but to no avail.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
