Hello all,

Does anybody know if h323 phones will work in an Avaya CM system version 7 without using a Media GW? We would like to have only H323 and SIP phones. We'll also install Session Manager and System Manager. What we don't know and is not obvious from what I read so far, is if we need a Media GW or not... If not, is it necessary to install some other software? We would like to install al the servers as virtual appliances. Thanks a lot!

Regards,
Ioan

Nope. You need DSPs to get IP sets registered and IP trunk groups in service.

So much depends on DSPs.

CM7 permits VMWare based DSPs off of the "Avaya Media Server" - but you'll need licensed channels on that, or an old gateway off ebay for $50.

Thanks for your response. In this moment I would only want to know if there is a solution and then I would check the prices. So Avaya Media Server will replace totally a Media Gateway, providing DSP resources? I hope I understood correctly... :)

Yes it would. AMS is old Nortel stuff that was adapted from Symposium/AACC for media resources to be a DSP farm for CM.

Now, it doesn't have any ports - so you'll never hook up a PRI or a digital set on it. What it can do is provide necessary DSPs for core SIP trunk deployments and call recording solutions.

Depending on what you're trying to do - and if you're asking about setting it up without a gateway, I'm thinking you want a lab/testbed - a cheap gateway off ebay is easy. The AMS has a touch more setup config, but if you get your lab orders discounted, go for it.

Yes, we need this for a LAB environment. We would like to connect only H323 and SIP phones, no PRI trunks or analog or digital phones. Actually a customer ask us if there is some solution to replace the GW. If AMS will be expenssive I will say him that the GW will be cheaper. And on the other hand I don't have any experience to configure AMS... Thanks a lot for your response.

Avaya's not stupid. The DSP channels are priced out about the same whether you put them in VMs or real gateways.

Less space and power is where the savings are realized.
