Just curious. And if anyone has any good insight if it is on the test, I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

HutchHutchison,

HEX as in hexadecimal numbers? You might see a MAC address - what exactly do you mean - like converting numbers or reading a hex dump or HEX as in how IPv6 is displayed?

You may see something about MAC addresses and you might see HEX in a screen capture of the output from a "show" command but you would just need to understand what "show" command has been run!

Hope this helps!

I was curious if they would give you a hexidecimal number and want you to convert it.

I don't remember it on the CCNA exams...but I know I had it in practice tests.

What I would do before starting the exam when given your dry erase board, write down the HEX to Decimal to Binary conversions. That way its a quick reference.

You will need it beyond the CCNA if you are looking at the CCNP certification.

HutchHutchison,

If you had a hex coverstion - it would be one of the easiest question on the whole exam.

The CCNA is a hard exam made up of complex questions where you apply different areas of your Cisco knowlege to solve a problem. A simple binary or hex coverstion would be the least of your problems!

The easiest way to do hex coverstions is -

10110011 to hex
1) Split the binary number in half
1011 -
0011 -

2) Solve for each half
1011 - is 11
0011 - is 3

3) convert decimal to hex
1-9 = 1-9
10 - A
11 - B
12 - C
13 - D
14 - E
15 - F

11 is B
3 is 3

So 10110011 is B3 in HEX

Same going other way - E9
E - is 15 and 15 is 1111
9 - is 9 and 9 is 1001
so E9 is 11111001

This is not rocket science - you would not get a large number even if you saw a hex converstion on the test!

As lerdalt said just write your hex and binary info down before you start the exam.

I hope this helps!
